It sounded like the servants were enjoying the Day of Misrule, but it must have been a lot of work to prepare for.Alliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03683230093775720398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074055834975214817.post-38316611318183275362016-04-24T10:05:20.081-04:002016-04-24T10:05:20.081-04:00Yeah, I know he is going to have a lot of grief an...Yeah, I know he is going to have a lot of grief and guilt to work through. I just hate that Imriel never had a chance to try to work through his emotions and obligations to Dorelei and Sidonie without magical influence.
Alliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03683230093775720398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074055834975214817.post-34751564967699932442016-04-24T10:02:58.447-04:002016-04-24T10:02:58.447-04:00I can imagine the dread, re-reading this and knowi...I can imagine the dread, re-reading this and knowing how horribly everything is going to go wrong.Alliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03683230093775720398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074055834975214817.post-53548727736613835292016-04-19T04:37:56.361-04:002016-04-19T04:37:56.361-04:00"The Day of Misrule seemed pretty fun, even i..."The Day of Misrule seemed pretty fun, even if it was all for show. The nobles did not truly serve the servants, they only pantomimed doing so with pre-prepared dishes and such."

I've been thinking more about this, and it kind of reminded me of Jewish Shabot. I have one Jewish parent and one Catholic parent, so I wasn't really raised Jewish so this wasn't the practice of my family, so maybe I don't fully get it because I'm an outside looking in, but it seems almost hypocritical to me. On Shabot, no one is supposed to work. It's supposed to be a day of rest. But jobs still need to be done. People still need to eat. Children still need to be cared for. So, as I look at it, it looks like more work for women. Women need to prepare all the food the day before and wash all the dishes the day after. They still need to take care of their kids but can't use things like tv (can't use electricity on Shabot) to help. So, as I see it, it's not a day of rest for moms at all and that makes it sexist.

So for Day of Misrule, it's not about servants ruling or equality or upsetting the status quo. It could even be argued that it can't be all that fun. Servants have more work the days before and after. It could be a bit classist.emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12945793193044137020noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074055834975214817.post-42422287052181145012016-04-18T16:54:29.099-04:002016-04-18T16:54:29.099-04:00If Talorcan had refused Alais's request, I wou...If Talorcan had refused Alais's request, I would have also thought less of him.

That's true. The servants did all the heavy work the day before and come the holiday, the nobles didn't really have to do the cleaning or the cooking.

You make a good point about Imri's self-absorption and his efforts to not spend so much time on it.

"Morwen and Berlik could have chosen to not be mind controllers, stalkers, rapists and murderers. That would have helped." Yeah- that really sums it up. They fucked up big time, over and over.

I think we will all miss Celeste.

Speaking about Imri and this love triangle that has been 'resolved' through this tragedy - Imri isn't one to lightly forget Dorolei and all that she taught him. nrlymrtlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00572346310916207565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6074055834975214817.post-30950222955646742282016-04-18T15:10:09.514-04:002016-04-18T15:10:09.514-04:00"I think it would also have brought them to a..."I think it would also have brought them to a much happier future for the Maghuin Dhonn. So far, all they seem to have accomplished is to get their people hunted down and killed by their own countrymen, instead of by the monster Imriel’s future son may or may not have become."

Even though I've read the books before, I was so struck or moved or upset by parts this week. I don't know. Maybe because I know what's about to happen (just speaking in terms of this weeks portion). Just with Morwen knowing she is a sacrifice/punishment for her own meddling.

"It would have been bad for his reputation if Clunderry had to ransom him back."

I never really thought about it like that. I think I never took the cattle raid seriously (though I probably should have).emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12945793193044137020noreply@blogger.com
